Lab 9: The “Roommate Background Check”

Lab 9: The “Roommate Background Check”

Department: The School of Personal Safety / Independent Living

Target Audience: Ages 18–21 (Transitioning to Independence)

TEFA Category: Social Skills / Independent Living

“You are about to live with a stranger. Let’s vet them.” Moving in with someone is more than just sharing a kitchen; it’s a legal and financial partnership. Whether it’s a best friend or a random person from a housing app, a “bad roommate” is one of the leading causes of stress, financial loss, and even legal trouble for young adults. This lab teaches you how to conduct a professional-grade “vetting process” to ensure your home remains a sanctuary, not a crime scene.

The Experience

In this immersive social-intelligence lab, students move beyond “vibes” and into “verification.” We treat the roommate search like a high-level background investigation. You’ll practice the art of the Behavioral Interview, learning which questions to ask to reveal hidden habits before the lease is signed.

Participants will work through high-friction simulations using our Conflict Resolution Scripts. You’ll learn exactly what to say when a guest overstays their welcome, when the dishes pile up, or when a bill is late. We also dive into the “Math of Fairness,” providing templates for splitting utilities and rent that prevent resentment and keep the peace.

Core Skills Developed

  • Vetting & Verification: Learning to cross-reference “roommate profiles” with social reality and checking for financial reliability.

  • The “Roommate Constitution”: Drafting a legally-minded house agreement that covers guests, noise, cleanliness, and shared resources.

  • De-escalation Scripts: Mastering professional communication techniques to address small issues before they escalate into “eviction-level” drama.

  • Fiscal Transparency: Setting up shared payment systems (Venmo/Splitwise protocols) that ensure no one is left holding the bag for someone else’s late payment.
