Lab 3: The Inside Out” Protocol (Emotional Regulation)

Department: The School of Forensic Psychology

Target Audience: Ages 11–14 (Middle School)

TEFA Category: Educational Therapy / Behavioral Health

“Your brain is a crime scene. Let’s clean it up.” Sometimes, your emotions can feel chaotic and overwhelming, like someone upended your desk and painted the walls with anger or sadness. When that happens, your brain becomes a messy crime scene that you don’t know how to navigate. The “Inside Out” Protocol is your toolkit for becoming a behavioral crime scene investigator—but instead of solving external crimes, you’re analyzing the data inside your own mind.

The Experience

Specifically designed for students managing ADHD or Anxiety, this lab doesn’t ask you to just “talk about your feelings.” Instead, we treat emotional regulation as a science. We throw away phrases like “I’m sad” or “I’m overwhelmed” and replace them with precise forensic terminology. You will learn to view your emotional spikes as psychological evidence. When you feel a sudden surge of anger, we don’t look for blame; we analyze the “crime scene” data: Is the Amygdala hijacking the Pre-frontal Cortex? We provide the precise, evidence-based language to diagnose your internal state, moving emotional challenges from the realm of “personal failure” to “biological data analysis.”

Core Skills Developed

  • Neuroscientific Literacy: Learning to map emotional experiences to specific brain regions (the “why” behind the “feel”).

  • Emotional De-escalation: Mastering “cold-case” analysis of past emotional triggers to predict and prevent future “hijackings.”

  • Cognitive Reframing: Viewing ADHD/Anxiety traits not as weaknesses, but as behavioral evidence requiring specific management strategies.

  • Forensic Communication: Gaining the skills to communicate intense emotional states objectively and scientifically to parents, teachers, and therapists.
