Lab 2: True Crime Psychology: Why They Do It

Department: The School of Forensic Psychology

Target Audience: Ages 15–21 (High School & Transition)

TEFA Category: Psychology / Social Studies

“Don’t just watch the documentary. Analyze the mind.” We live in a culture obsessed with true crime, but how often do we look past the headlines to the “Why”? Behind every case is a complex web of biology, environment, and choice. This lab invites you to stop being a passive viewer and start acting as a forensic investigator, peeling back the layers of the human psyche to understand the origins of criminal behavior.

The Experience

This lab serves as a sophisticated introduction to Abnormal Psychology. Using carefully curated, age-appropriate case studies, students will move beyond the “sensational” and into the “scientific.” We explore the “Biopsychosocial Model”—a framework that examines how genetics, brain chemistry, childhood experiences, and social stressors collide to create a “perfect storm.”

Participants will work in “Investigation Teams” to map out the Motive, Opportunity, and Environmental Factors of specific cases. You will learn to identify the early warning signs (behavioral red flags) and the psychological differences between various types of offenders, all while maintaining a focus on victim advocacy and ethical analysis.

Core Skills Developed

  • Psychological Profiling: Understanding the basics of behavioral patterns and how they relate to personality disorders.

  • Environmental Analysis: Evaluating how “nurture” (upbringing, socio-economics, and peer influence) impacts decision-making.

  • Critical Evaluation: Learning to separate media “myth” from clinical reality in high-profile cases.

  • Ethical Reasoning: Navigating the thin line between curiosity and the ethical responsibility of studying human tragedy.
