Lab 13: The Mock Trial Workshop

Lab 13: The Mock Trial Workshop

Department: The School of Legal Intelligence

Target Audience: Ages 14–18 (High School)

TEFA Category: Speech / Debate / Civics

“Objection! Hearsay.” You’ve seen the courtroom dramas on TV, but do you actually know how a case is won? It’s rarely about the loudest voice in the room; it’s about the most logical one. In the “Mock Trial Workshop,” the classroom is transformed into a court of law. Whether you are the prosecutor seeking justice or the defense attorney protecting rights, you’ll learn that the truth is only as strong as your ability to argue it.

The Experience

This is a high-intensity, role-play-driven lab where students step into the shoes of legal professionals. We don’t just read about the law; we litigate it. Using a curated forensic case study, students are assigned roles—Attorneys, Witnesses, Bailiffs, and Jurors—to conduct a full-scale trial.

“In this room, your opinion doesn’t matter. Only the evidence you can admit into the record does.”

Participants will learn the art of the Opening Statement, the tactical precision of Cross-Examination, and the high-pressure world of Instant Objections. You’ll learn to navigate the Texas Rules of Evidence and understand the mechanics of the American Justice System from the inside out.

Core Skills Developed

  • Logical Argumentation: Learning to build a “Theory of the Case” and identifying logical fallacies in your opponent’s arguments.

  • Mastery of Public Speaking: Developing a “Command Presence”—mastering tone, body language, and eye contact to persuade a jury.

  • Civic Literacy: Deepening your understanding of the 6th Amendment (Right to a Fair Trial) and the burden of proof (Beyond a Reasonable Doubt).

  • Critical Thinking under Pressure: Practicing the ability to “think on your feet” when a witness goes off-script or an unexpected objection is sustained.
