Lab 12: OSINT for Students (Advanced Research Skills)

Department: The School of Digital Intelligence / College Prep

Target Audience: Ages 15–21 (College Prep & Research)

TEFA Category: Library Science / Research Skills

“Google is just the surface. Let’s go deeper.” Did you know that a standard Google search only touches a tiny fraction of the information available on the web? In a world of “Fake News” and deepfakes, the ability to verify information isn’t just an academic skill—it’s a survival skill. Whether you are researching a university’s true safety record, vetting a potential employer, or fact-checking a viral news story, you need the tools used by intelligence analysts and investigative journalists.

The Experience

This lab introduces students to the world of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT). We move beyond the first page of search results into the “Deep Web” of public records, archived data, and digital footprints. Students will act as digital private investigators, learning how to peel back the layers of a website or a social media profile to find the ground truth.

Participants will engage in “Verification Sprints,” where they must use specialized tools to determine the origin of a suspicious photo or verify the credentials of a “subject” in a case study. We teach the ethics of digital research, ensuring students understand the line between professional investigation and privacy invasion, while giving them the power to never be fooled by a headline again.

Core Skills Developed

  • Advanced Querying: Mastering “Google Dorks” (advanced search operators) to find specific files, directories, and hidden data.

  • Image & Video Forensics: Using reverse image searches and metadata analysis to pinpoint where and when a piece of media was actually created.

  • Source Triangulation: Learning to verify “facts” by cross-referencing multiple independent data points to spot disinformation.

  • Digital Vetting: Using public registries and social archives to research the reputation and history of organizations, colleges, or professional contacts.
