Lab 4: The Traveler’s Protocol (Study Abroad / Trip Prep)

Lab 4: The Traveler’s Protocol

Department: The School of Personal Safety

Target Audience: Ages 16–21 (High School & College Prep)

TEFA Category: Safety Education

“Going to Europe? Or just Austin? Don’t look like a tourist.” Whether you’re heading across the ocean for a study abroad program or just heading to a new city for a weekend getaway, the quickest way to become a target is to look like you don’t belong. Predatory individuals look for “soft targets”—people who are distracted, lost, or unaware of their surroundings. This lab is your crash course in urban survival, teaching you how to move through the world with the confidence of a local and the preparation of a pro.

The Experience

This is a hands-on tactical prep lab designed for the modern young traveler. We move beyond basic “stranger danger” and dive into real-world security protocols used by professionals. Students will engage in simulated environments to practice high-stakes travel skills.

We don’t just tell you to be safe; we show you the “how.” You’ll learn the “Deadbolt Test” for securing temporary housing, the “Digital Footprint” method for safe ridesharing, and how to identify the subtle “theatrical” setups used by professional pickpockets in crowded transit hubs. By the end of this lab, you won’t just feel safer—you’ll be a “hard target.”

Core Skills Developed

  • Urban Situational Awareness: Learning to identify “environmental anomalies” and exit strategies in unfamiliar transit hubs.

  • Physical Security Maneuvers: Mastering the “Deadbolt Test” and portable door-lock techniques for hotels and Airbnbs.

  • Tech-Safety Integration: Full mastery of “Uber Safety” and “Find My” features, including setting up emergency check-in protocols.

  • The “Grey Man” Strategy: Learning how to blend in through dress, body language, and phone usage to avoid attracting unwanted attention.
