The Junior Forensic Investigator Internship

Program Area: Career & Technical Education (CTE) / Forensic Science

Target Audience: Grades 7–12 (Ages 12–18)

Instructional Format: 5-Day Intensive (30 Total Contact Hours)

Course Overview

Students step into the role of a Junior Investigator to solve a complex, multi-layered “cold case.” The curriculum moves beyond basic fingerprinting to explore the psychology of deception, digital footprints, and the legal ethics of investigation.

Daily Module Breakdown

Day 1: The Scene & The Science

  • Morning Session: Principles of Forensic Science and the “CSI Effect.” Understanding the reality vs. fiction of modern investigation.

  • Lab Session: Physical Evidence Recovery. Mastering the Chain of Custody, latent print lifting, and crime scene photography.

  • Key Skill: Systematic Observation and Documentation.

Day 2: The Truth Audit (Psychological Profiling)

  • Morning Session: Introduction to Psycholinguistics. Analyzing the structure of language to identify “Linguistic Indicators of Deception.”

  • Lab Session: Statement Analysis Workshop. Students use the Truth Audit framework to analyze suspect transcripts for “I-Gaps,” tense shifting, and exclusionary qualifiers.

  • Key Skill: Critical Thinking and Behavioral Analysis.

Day 3: Digital Shadows (Cyber Intelligence)

  • Morning Session: The World of OSINT (Open Source Intelligence). How investigators use the public internet to track digital footprints.

  • Lab Session: Digital Evidence Recovery. Identifying metadata in photos, recognizing “phishing” footprints, and understanding the basics of online safety and cyber-bullying prevention.

  • Key Skill: Digital Literacy and Information Security.

Day 4: Professional Ethics & The Unbreakable Mindset

  • Morning Session: The Legal Framework. Understanding the Texas Penal Code and the role of an investigator within the justice system.

  • Lab Session: High-Stakes Communication. Role-playing de-escalation techniques and professional interactions with law enforcement and the community.

  • Key Skill: Advocacy, Civics, and Emotional Intelligence.

Day 5: The Capstone – The Grand Jury Simulation

  • Morning Session: Case File Finalization. Teams synthesize their physical, digital, and linguistic evidence into a final investigative report.

  • Lab Session: The Simulation. Students present their findings to a “Mock Jury.” They must defend their evidence under cross-examination.

  • Key Skill: Public Speaking, Presentation, and Synthesis of Complex Information.
